new food truck: Egg Slut

Once in a while a new food truck comes along that gives me the butterflies (excitement) and I felt it once again in the Egg Slut. The name in itself would cause you to double take and make sure you read it right. I’m sure it’s causing a lot of discussions (among other drivers) while they are on the freeway or stuck in traffic. In fact, I had to explain to my middle schooler what “slut” means. I figured it’s best the explanation comes from her mom rather than finding out about it from somewhere or someone else. So, before I drift on to an entirely different topic let me go back to food. Yes, the Egg Slut.

Since I’m dying of curiosity as to the food at Egg Slut I made plans to drop by when they tweeted their late night stop at Verdugo Bar.

I was greeted by a very simple white truck. I guess in this instance it’s all in the name.

A menu that fits the location. I wish there were more items but it just gives me reason to come back :)

Let get down to the business of the food. First up is Thee Slut. Unique presentation coming from a GFT. I followed what @ChefBevLazo advised on her tumblr (click HERE to read her post), I took a piece of toast dipped it in the yolk to break it, mixed it with the white and dipped it so when I pull back I have the egg and the creamy potato puree and the toast in one bite. She is right, after one bite you just can’t stop. I would say this dish is aptly named. When I think of this dish and the way it tasted, I think of the words glorious and divine. For the hard core egg slut, this is THE dish.

Not'cho Slut - braised beef in rojo chile sauce, Monterey Jack cheese, cheddar cheese, scallions and an over easy egg, on a bed of fresh tortilla chips, jalapenos served on request $10

Not’cho Slut is the perfect companion to any alcoholic beverage (in my opinion, at least). It is “nachos with toppings” kind of dish but elevated 10 times more. The beef in itself is super rich (I could’ve easily separated them from the rest and eat it with rice, yes, that’s the Pinoy in me) and super tasty. Somehow the richness of the egg and the richness of the braised beef do not clash, the cheese and jalapenos provides great balance to the dish. Definitely not’cho normal nachos.

Nita

Nita - braised carnitas with chimichurri, cotija cheese, an over medium egg on a brioche bun $9

First of all did you see that yolk dripping down? oh-em-gee, I would’ve taken a video of it if it didn’t happen so fast. Now that’s a perfect egg! That on top of carnitas that they cook for 8 hours…are you kidding me? In the words of Giulianna Rancic…AMAZEBALLS. Truly. You really have to taste it to believe it. Just simple ingredients done right. Somehow, they manage to take these simple ingredients, chose the right bread, cook the egg and the carnitas the way it should be cooked without shortcuts et voila! you get a sandwich that will transport you to cloud 9 on first bite.

The Egg Daddy - signature fried egg cheeseburger, 100% all beef patty, over medium egg, Tillamook cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, Roma tomatoes, baby romaine lettuce, and honey mustard aioli, served on a brioche bun, chipotle ketchup served upon request $8

Okay, I have a confession to make. I’ve never had a fried egg cheeseburger. So I don’t know what to expect. The thought that came to my mind on first bite was rice. I would love the burger patty topped with that gorgeously cooked egg drizzled with chipotle ketchup over rice. Like I said, it’s the Pinoy in me. Then I started to appreciate what I would say a recurring theme with this food truck…simple food done right with a twist.

And after all that I’m hungry for more eggs. A return visit is definitely a must at the soonest possible time for my benefit and of course I have fast and abstain before future visits. My thoughts on this food truck? The heart and brains of this operation a.k.a. the Egg Slut Food Truck are definitely passionate, talented and inspired people (among other things). Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that surprises us, in this case, the egg. I liked everything I tasted. And they are super nice.

They have the simplest truck design with the gasp-inducing name that has taken the “incredibly edible EGG” to new heights and made it a star.
